At a glance

The problem

What the customer called about

A Bixby homeowner (74008) called after water started pouring from the air vents in a downstairs bedroom, and showed up in an upstairs hallway bathroom and a downstairs bathroom too. He had already shut the water off.

Diagnosis

What our plumber found

Trystan and Josh cut several access points in the downstairs ceiling to see what was leaking. With the water back on, the meter showed no movement, so there was no active leak in the supply lines. We flushed the upstairs toilet and ran both vanities and the tub, and we could not make it leak. We also checked the HVAC condensate drain in the attic, and it was working properly.

The fix

How we fixed it

The cause turned out to be the upstairs toilet. It had a soft clog, and its fill valve had malfunctioned and kept refilling the bowl. That flooded the upstairs bathroom, and the water ran down through the floor into the first-floor ceiling and the air vents.

Takeaway

What this means for your home

Water coming out of an air vent is not always the AC. We test the meter, the fixtures and the condensate line until the source is found, so you fix the right thing. Shutting off the water, like this homeowner did, was the right first move.
