Slab Leak Signs: What Tulsa Homeowners Should Watch For

Answer

The short answer

The three most common signs of a slab leak are a water bill that is higher than normal, spots on your floor (especially tile) that feel extremely hot or extremely cold, and a water meter dial that keeps spinning when nobody is using water.

Warning signs

Signs you can check yourself

  • A higher water bill than normal, with no change in how you use water.
  • Hot or cold spots on the floor. Tile is where you notice it most. A hot spot usually points to a hot water line.
  • A spinning meter. The dial on the meter in your front yard should not move when no water is running.
Meter check

The 2-minute meter check

  1. Turn off every faucet and every appliance that uses water.
  2. Go out to the water meter in your front yard.
  3. Watch the dial. If it still moves, water is leaking somewhere.

A moving dial does not prove the leak is under the slab, but it tells you it is time to call.

Finding it

How a slab leak is found

We bring in a dedicated leak-location specialist, Dylan Nelson of Help Services. He uses sonar equipment to listen underground and usually pinpoints the pipe size and the location and depth of the leak to within six inches. He gives a report to you and to us.

Your options

Repair through the slab or reroute

You choose. We can open the slab and fix the pipe, or, about 75% of the time, reroute the water line through the attic and back down the wall and abandon the old line under the slab. Then nobody has to break through your floor. If your home has older red and blue PEX, there is usually more than one bad line, so replacing it all often makes more sense.
