If the disposal sits unused
The biggest problem we see is that a lot of people don't like using their garbage disposal, so they never turn it on.
Even if you don't plan on using your garbage disposal, it's still good to turn it on about once every couple of weeks and get those blades spinning freely.
When replacement is indicated
If it starts rusting, it starts leaking out the bottom. That's a good indication that it has to be replaced.

Repair, replace, and which size
- We replace a disposal when the grinding chamber is badly rusted (it stops grinding finely and backs up drains) or the seals are leaking.
- Our standard is a 1/2 hp unit with a 4-year manufacturer warranty. For heavy use, we suggest the all-stainless 3/4 hp with a 9-year warranty.
- What kills disposals: harsh chemical drain cleaners (use bacteria-based cleaners), bones in smaller units, and aquarium rocks, coins, screws or washers.
- A typical swap takes about an hour to an hour and a half.
