The problem

What the customer called about

A Tulsa homeowner had been told there were gas leaks in the house. The gas company shut the gas off, and the meter was plugged and capped. It could not be turned back on until the leaks were fixed and the line passed a city inspection.

Diagnosis

What our plumber found

We put 3 pounds of air pressure on the gas system and checked every exposed fitting outside by the meter, in the crawl space and inside the house. In the first hour we found three leaks: one on the riser nipple tying into the customer side of the meter, and two inside the hallway water heater closet, on a 3/4-by-1/2 bushing and on a 3/4 galvanized thread protector.

The fix

How we fixed it

We reset the riser nipple at the meter. In the water heater closet there was no union, so we cut the gas line out and rebuilt it, then added a union so it can be serviced later. When we aired the line back up, the gauge was still dropping after 15 minutes. With every exposed pipe already tested, we opened the closet wall and found one more leaking galvanized thread protector, which we replaced with a coupling. The next test held for the full 15 minutes without dropping.

We also capped the old floor furnace at the homeowner's request and connected the water heater vent. We pulled the City of Tulsa gas permit and called in the inspection. The inspection passed, and after a passed inspection the inspector contacts ONG to release the meter.

Takeaway

What this means for your home

As Michael says, "If we turn it off, we can turn it back on. If the ONG turns it off, we can't turn it back on." Once the gas company shuts a meter off for a leak, the leaks have to be found and fixed, and the line has to pass inspection before service comes back. A pressure test finds them without pushing gas into the house.

Questions

Straight Answers

How do you find gas leaks when the gas is shut off?

We put air pressure on the gas system with a gauge and check the fittings. If the gauge drops, there is still a leak somewhere, so we keep going until the line holds.

How long does a gas line have to hold pressure?

On this job we watched the gauge for 15 minutes after each repair. The line passed when it held the full 15 minutes without dropping.

Who turns the gas back on after the meter is pulled?

After the City of Tulsa inspection passes, the inspector contacts ONG to release the meter.
